Manchester
United FC extended their lead at the top of the Premier League to four
points after a 5-0 victory at Wolverhampton Wanderers FC, while Chelsea
FC and Liverpool FC progressed to the FA Cup semi-finals.
United responded in imperious style to their UEFA Europa League exit and broke the deadlock after 21 minutes through Jonny Evans. The hosts' task was made even more difficult when Ronald Zubar was dismissed close to half-time, and Antonio Valencia and Danny Welbeck were then able to put the game beyond doubt.
Javier Hernández found the net twice inside five second-half minutes to complete the rout and leave Wolves bottom on goal difference. Elsewhere, Newcastle United FC moved to within five points of a UEFA Champions League berth after Papiss Demba Cissé's first-half strike sealed a 1-0 win against Norwich City FC.
In the FA Cup quarter-finals, Chelsea overcame second-tier Leicester City FC 5-2, with Fernando Torres scoring his first goals since October. Liverpool also progressed as they beat Stoke City FC 2-1. Luis Suárez’s opener was cancelled out by Peter Crouch's smart header, but Stewart Downing won it for the hosts.
